Focus Skill :Author’s Purpose

Objective: To identify an author’s purpose for writing a text. To identify and understand an informational narrative selection

Activity:  Students listened to this weeks reading selection, “A Very Important Day”, on tape. We discussed how knowing the author’s purpose can help understand and comprehend as they read a selection. We learned that author’s use text structures depending on their purpose.  They may use sequence, main ideas, and details to support and make their purposes clear.

Objective: To teach a variety of vocabulary strategies for better understanding the meanings of unknown words

Activity: Students read a handout over vocabulary in context and vocabulary power from their reader to get a grasp on their new vocabulary words in this week’s story. They used their glossaries to look up the definitions. For additional opportunities to practice this skill, hey were assigned a vocabulary worksheet to match vocabulary words to riddles and clue words.
